Have you ever wished you could save an important phone conversation? Maybe it was directions from a friend, details about a job offer, or instructions from your doctor. Until recently, iPhone users had to download special apps or use complicated methods to record their calls. But good news! The latest iPhone update has made this much easier.

Your iPhone Can Now Record Calls

With the release of iOS 18.1, Apple has made it possible for your iPhone to record phone calls all by itself – no extra apps needed. This new feature not only records the conversation but also creates a written version (transcript) of what was said, and even gives you a short summary of the call.

Apple made sure this feature is honest and respectful. When you start recording, both you and the person you're talking to will hear a message announcing that recording has begun. There's also a visible indicator on the screen during the entire recording, so everyone knows what's happening.

Your privacy is protected too. All recordings are saved in your Notes app with special security protection, and the written version of your call is created right on your iPhone – your conversation doesn't go to Apple's computers.

How to Record a Call on Your iPhone

It's as simple as:

  1. Make or answer a phone call

  2. Tap the wavy line icon (it looks like a sound wave) in the top-left corner

  3. Everyone on the call will hear an announcement that recording has started

  4. The recording saves automatically to your Notes app when you end the call or stop recording

Finding Your Recorded Calls

After you've recorded a call, you can find it in your Notes app. When you tap on a recording, you can:

  • Listen to the conversation again

  • Read the written version of what was said

  • Look at a short summary of the main points

  • Share or delete the recording if needed

Important Note About Recording Laws

Even though your iPhone now makes recording easier and announces to everyone that recording has begun, it's still important to know the recording laws in your area. In some places, you need permission from everyone on the call before recording. The safest approach is to always ask for verbal permission before you start recording.

This feature works on compatible iPhones running iOS 18.1 or newer versions.
